Sunset Runs

Starting with our first year as owners of Fleet Feet Sports – San Francisco, in 2006 we have hosted an annual running series called Sunset Runs. Each summer we host these casual, non-competitive fun runs as a vehicle to raise funds for a charity close to our hearts.

The runs them selves are very low tech. We do not use a timing company, block roads, or use bib numbers. Each run is designed to keep costs low while maximizing the race-day experience. The course is set along the San Francisco Bay, and the event is held in the evening. Runners get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands during sunset. Before and after the run, we have a DJ spinning, drinks and bagels, and lots of great raffle prizes.

The true purpose of the run, aside from offering a fun, community run for our customers, is to raise money for charity. Each year, since 2006 we have held a Sunset Run for Students Run Oakland and for the Ethembeni School. In the past three years we have added a third fun run for a rotating third charity. L’Athletique d’Haiti and The Livestrong Foundation have benefited from this third run.

Students Run Oakland is an after-school tutoring/mentoring/running program for high school students living in East Oakland. Each year, Students Run Oakland train 70-100 students to run the Los Angeles Marathon, while simultaneously offer them an opportunity to see tutors, counselors, yoga instructors and more.
The Ethembeni School is a boarding school for primarily Zulu children living with  Cerible Palsy, visual impairment, and other physical disabilities in rural South Africa. The school is home to 300 students between the ages of four and 18, and is their residence as well as their school. The community where the school is located is just north of Durban in an area where unemployment is consistently over 25%, poverty is a way of life, and many modern amenities are inaccessible to the residents.

In the five years we have hosted Sunset Runs, we have grown the events from our first run of 28 attendants to our most recent run in 2010 of 330 runners.
