One Day For Ethembeni

Join us in celebrating Thanksgiving Weekend by giving back to those in need!

This Black Friday will mark the third year that owners, Brett Lamb & Kim Holt, will utilize this consumer-oriented day to highlight and promote the act of giving. During Black Friday weekend, Fleet Feet Sports San Francisco will donate $10,000 of their profits to the Ethembeni Foundation.

History of "One Day for Ethembeni" at Fleet Feet Sports SF

Two years ago, we started this tradition by donating to the Filipino Earthquake Relief when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippine Island of Bohol.  Brett & Kim took the name "One Day" from a photograph taken by George Rodriguez of a poem written in graffiti in Los Angeles during the 1960s. The poem read: "It is better to live one day as a lion than a thousand years as a lamb." The quote eloquently conveys their approach to raising awareness for a cause that emotionally impacts them. Rather than using small events throughout the year, they wanted to make a greater impact by focusing on a weekend notoriously known as a day for shopping.

What is the Ethembeni Foundation?

The Ethembeni Foundation aims to help disadvantaged children living in South Africa by sponsoring the Ethembeni Orphanage, a boarding school about an hour outside of Durban, South Africa that is home to 300 special needs students.  The school caters specifically to students who are living with physical disabilities like cerebral palsy and visual impairments by providing medical care, education, meals, and a warm environment for children between the ages of 5 and 18.

Make sure to stop by our Marina and SOMA Fleet Feet Sports locations to raise money and awareness for the Ethembeni Foundation!

Last year, we raised over $2,300 for our "One Day for Ethembeni." Brett & Kim's hope is that with the opening of the new SOMA location, Fleet Feet Sports San Francisco will be able to donate up to $10,000. This would provide 10 annual scholarships, as it costs approximately $1,000/year for one student to stay at the school.
